I’m counting down the days. It’s D-5.

Home, family, old friends, my home’s kitchen, treadmill, swimming pool, Pacific Place, Grand Indonesia, FX, Senayan City, cafes, restaurants, lounges, Aksara, DVDs @ Ambassador, Mayestik, tailor, Aquarius, Vineth’s brotchen pretzel, Kemchik’s salads, TransJakarta, traffic jam, Kemang, Airport, etc.

I can’t wait any longer for those things. Jakarta, oh Jakarta! I’m comiiing!

Paradoxes

Posted in Creativity & Innovation with tags , on December 13, 2008 by Primo

A man named Mihaly (who the hell is he, anyway?) said that there are ten behavior paradoxes that own by creative people. Here they are:

1. Creative people have a great deal of physical energy, but they’re also often quiet and at rest.

Okay, I think this happened because creativity is a process. So, they (the creative people) are often quiet and at rest because they need to create peace, serenity, or else to get some inspiration. When they keep quiet, actually their mind is processing anything that they see for an inspiration. When the inspiration already come up, they are passionate to realizing it, so they put lot of physical energy there.

2. Creative people tend to be smart yet naive at the same time.

Naive here means high curiosity. So, creative people are naive or curious about anything, that’s what makes them smart.

3. Creative people combine playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.

This proved that creative people are not rigid. They can be discipline or follow the rules, but they also add some playfulness to make thing not that stiff. I think because they feel that “do the things right” is not comforting for them, they are more likely to follow the philosophy of “do the right things”.

4. Creative people alternate between imagination and fantasy, and a rooted sense of reality.

Imagination is the key for creativity. Creative people always fantasizing their ideas but also not to forget the reality because they will collide both to bring the fantasy into reality.

5. Creative people trend to be both extroverted and introverted.

They become introvert when they are looking for an inspiration. They often go out alone or contemplating in a quiet place alone to look for inspirations or ideas. But when they get the inspiration, they become extrovert to “publish” things that they get.

6. Creative people are humble and proud at the same time.

The humble attitude is to make them can proud of themselves or their works to other people.

7. Creative people, to an extent, escape rigid gender role stereotyping.

Creative people cannot be limited, so they will break any border. Even the gender role, they will break it for creativity.

8. Creative people are both rebellious and conservative.

Just like I said before, creative people are not rigid. The rebellious attitude is for the out-of-the-box ideas, and the conservativeness is guiding them to keep the ideas on the track.

9. Most creative people are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.

Every works they made are based from the heart. No wonder if their work is fulfilled with passion. So, once they are not satisfied with their works, they can be very objective because their heart says it’s not the right thing or not really good.

10. Creative people’s openness and sensitivity often exposes them to suffering and pain, yet also to a great deal of enjoyment.

Suffer and pain can bring inspiration for creative people. For example, I know a famous writer who can write good stories when she is in pain or sadness. She said that the sadness gives “natural feels” into her works. So, it’s true that suffering and pain is also a great deal of enjoyment.

Yeah, I guess that’s my (short and unimportant) analysis on the ten paradoxes. Cheers!

NB: Actually this is my second post of this topic! The first one was gone on the process of publishing due to the bad internet connection!!! Damn!

JIFFest-ing

Posted in Creativity & Innovation, Personal Life, Random Notes with tags , , , , , , , on December 8, 2008 by Primo

I just got back from Kineforum @ Taman Ismail Marzuki for 10th Annual Jakarta International Film Festival (Jiffest). They screened “A View From The SEA” section there, a section for Southeast Asian movies.

I already missed two Jiffest year due to my study in Bandung which made me couldn’t get back to Jakarta just for the festival. But this year, they held the festival on the holiday (It’s Eid-ul Adha break!). Yeay! So, I decided to attend this year’s festival which (unfortunately) only runs for 5 days.

The movie that I just saw is “Punggok Rindukan Bulan (This Longing)”. It’s Malaysian movie directed by Azharr Rudin.

A film about a boy, barely in secondary school, Sidi and his father Adman, who both unknowingly cope with the sudden absence of a key female figure in their life. In probably separate story, a boyish young woman returns to photograph the backdrop of her past. Set in the border town of Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The literal meaning of the title is a Malay saying like “the owl misses the moon” a reflection of unrequited (and unconsummated) longing.” (Taken from Jiffest website).

It’s a “tough” movie. Need some times to get the whole point because it has two unparallel plot. IMO, it’s a bit draggy and so slooowww. But overall, it’s quite a nice movie. Nice cameraworks, great actors. Oh, thing that I don’t like from this movie is the sound! They don’t use any scoring or music illustration. But instead, they recorded on-the-set sound which made the movie so quiet but noisy.

The one that surprised me is Sharifah Amani, my favorite Malay actress, took part in this movie. She played character Riza, the girl on the second part of the movie. She acted well, just like in her other works; Sepet, Gubra, etc.

At the end of the screening, the commitee gave us a surprise, another surprise for me. Azharr Rudin, the director, came to the studio and we had some Q&A sessions. He explained that this movie is a mood-piece. So, the inexistence of scoring or music is made to built the “gloomy” mood of missing someone we love the most. Yes, refer to the title, people; “Punggok Rindukan Bulan (This Longing)”. Actually the Q&A session turned into a “critics time”, there was a woman that looked unsatisfied with the movie. She “slapped” Azharr by saying “I’ve waited for 2 hours to see nothing!”. Ouch. But I think that’s the point of film festival, we can share our thoughts of the movie directly to the director/producer so they get feedback from the audiences.

Actually, there’s another movie that I looked forward to watch; Thailand’s “A Moment In June”. But I couldn’t made it because the screening was on Saturday night when I was still on the way to Jakarta. So sad.

I guess tommorow I’m going back to Kineforum to catch “Wonderful Town”. But, have to check on my schedule first; Eid-ul Adha family gath, deadline for assignments, going back to Bandung. Argh!

og

1. Cacat vokal.

Oh iya, satu hal lagi tentang telur. Gw paling nggak suka kalo orang ngomong atau nulis telur itu pake “O”, jadinya “telor”. Hiiii, jijik!

4. Bandel. Dulu waktu kecil gw bandeeel setengah mati. Hahaha! Pernah ngedorong tante gw ke kolam ikan, trus pernah ngegigit pipi temen TK gw sama sodara jauh gw, mukul anak temennya Oom gw sambil jalan gitu (jadi, cuma lewat doank, tapi gw pukul), trus pernah juga waktu tahun baruan gitu di hotel gw mau mukulin anaknya yang punya hotel. Hahaha. Nggak tau ya kapan turning point gw, tapi sekarang sih gw nggak sebandel itu lagi.

5. Emosi. Wah, ini juga masalah gw. Gw itu emosional banget orangnya. Kalo gw udah kesel, bisa bener-bener marah-marah yang meledak-ledak gitu. Contohnya nih ya, dulu sih kalo pas jaman sekolah gw pernah kesel sama kaderisasi semacam ekskul gitu yang bikin capek banget, saking keselnya pas lagi pelajaran tiba-tiba gw marah-marah sendiri, trus matah-matahin penggaris gitu sampe banting-banting meja. Trus pernah juga gw berantem sama orang dari PLN, gw lupa gimana ceritanya, pokoknya gw maki-maki sampe nendangin pintu rumah sambil bawa-bawa cutter buat ngempesin ban motornya si orang PLN itu. Hahaha!

6. Kakak. Waktu jaman awal SMA, gw kepengen banget punya kakak. Dua kakak, tepatnya.

Hehehe. Soalnya, gw bercita-cita buat kalo udah tua nanti, gw pengen punya semacam museum buat ngedokumentasiin film-film Indonesia. Biasanya, alesan gw tiap ditanyain kenapa ngumpulin begituan pasti bilangnya, “Eh, jangan salah! Ini tuh nantinya langka lhooo!”. Hahaha.

8. Masak. Gw suka masak! Kalo dulu pas kecil, kayaknya soalnya sering masak sama nyokap. Sampe akhirnya sekarang gw bisa masak macem-macem. Tapi speciality gw sih di pasta. Hehehe.

9. Menyendiri.

Dear, God

Dear God, I wanna ask you something.

“Why do people have feelings?”

Kalau gitu, kenapa nggak sekalian aja manusia nggak usah punya perasaan?

Eat, Eat, Eat

Udah dari kemaren gw ngerasa nggak enak badan. Pusing, batuk, agak flu, lemes, mual. Hmm, gw jadi ngidam makanan India tiba-tiba!

Hehehe. Gw pesen briyani pake lamb curry sama masala chai. Briyani sama curry-nya rasanya so-so. Bumbu briyani-nya enak sih, tapi masalahnya berasnya nggak pake basmati kayak semestinya. Jadinya kayak nasi goreng! Hahaha. Tapi rempahnya tuh enak bangeeet. Wangi dan rasanya hangat.

Ini bukan nasi briyani di warung itu!

Ini bukan nasi briyani di warung itu!

Hmm, overall sih Mr. Spicy ini biasa aja. Yaaa, lumayan lah kalo lagi pengen makanan India / Arab di Bandung.
